Etimologija (Anglų k.)

In summary

From Middle High German winbrā, wintprā, variants of Middle High German wintbrā, wintbrāwe, from Old High German wintbrāwa, from wint + brāwa; see Braue for the second component. It has been theorised that the first component may be cognate with Old Prussian wanso (“first hairs on the face”) and thence with Russian усы (usy, “moustache”), as well as Ancient Greek ἴονθος (íonthos, “downy hair”) and Middle Irish find (“hair”), all from Proto-Indo-European *wendʰ- (“to wind, to turn”), with "hair" being derived from the original "winding up and down" meaning. Cognate with Dutch wimper (“eyelash”).
