Etimologija (Anglų k.)

In summary

From Middle High German scheide, from Old High German sceida, from Proto-West Germanic *skaiþiju. Compare Low German scheed, Dutch schede, English sheath, Danish skede, Norwegian Bokmål skjede, Icelandic skeið. The anatomical sense (16th c.) is a calque of Latin vagīna. The sense “partition” is attested since Old High German, but as it is not found in other Germanic languages, it is sometimes considered a later deverbal derivation from the related verb scheiden.
