Back-formation from فِصْفِصَة (fiṣfiṣa), interpreted after فَصَّ (faṣṣa, “to pull, to pluck”) as قَتّْ (qatt, “alfalfa”) hails from قَتَّ (qatta, “to cut into strips”), and at least the fruits may also have reminded of a فِصّ (fiṣṣ, “a circular object such as a bulb, clove, ossicle etc.”).
