From Ottoman Turkish اوچوق (uçuk), ultimately a derivation from Proto-Turkic *uč- (“rash, inflammation, pustules on lips; catarrh, cold, fever; to appear (of rash), catch cold”). Cognate with Kazakh ұшық (ūşyq, “herpes”), Turkmen uçuk (“blister on the lips”), Uyghur ئۇچۇق (uchuq, “rash”).
