From Proto-Italic *peku, from Proto-Indo-European *péḱu (“cattle”). See also pecus, pecoris (“livestock, herd”) and pecus, pecudis. Doublet of feudum, which was borrowed from Germanic. Cognates Cognate with Sanskrit पशु (paśu), Lithuanian pekus and Proto-Germanic *fehu (whence English fee, German Vieh, Low German Veeh, Dutch vee, Danish fæ).
