Etîmolojî (Îngilîzî)
From Proto-Italic *awizdjō, a compound of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewis (“clearly, manifestly”) (from the root *h₂ew- (“to see, perceive”)) and *dʰh₁-ye/o- (“to render”). Cognates include Ancient Greek αἰσθάνομαι (aisthánomai, “to perceive”) (also originally "to render manifest"), whence English aesthetic, and ἀΐω (aḯō, “to perceive, hear”), Hittite 𒌋𒀪𒄭 (u-uḫ-ḫi, “I see”), Proto-Germanic *awiz (“obvious”) and Sanskrit आविस् (āvís, “openly, manifestly, evidently”).
