Borrowed from Arabic حَيْف (ḥayf, “injustice”).. Sense 2 is back-formation from heyf vegerrandin/heyf vekirin (“to avenge; lit. to do injustice back, to return cruelty”), displaced native tol in most Northern dialects. That sense is also found in Armenian հայիֆ (hayif).
