Compare dialectal didan, akin to Central Kurdish دگان (dgan), دیان (dyan), دان (dan), Southern Kurdish ددان (ddan), دنان (dnan), Zazaki didan; from earlier didan < *dindan, which is difficult to pronounce in modern Kurdish speech and therefore caused multiple variaties across Kurdish languages, however the -d- > -r- sound change is unique. Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *Hdántā (“tooth”).
