From Latin talpa (“mole”) with a change in gender. The original [ɫ] appears to have vocalized to [u̯] in pre-literary Tuscan, with the resulting [au̯] regularly yielding [ɔ], as in Latin aurum (“gold”) > Italian òro. Doublet of talpa.
