From New Latin elasticus (“elastic”), from Ancient Greek as if *ἐλαστής (*elastḗs) for ἐλατής (elatḗs), equiv. to ἐλατήρ (elatḗr, “a driver, hurler”), from ἐλαύνειν (elaúnein, “to drive, set in motion, push, strike, beat out”). Cognate with Piedmontese elàstich.
