Attested as Navia in Classical Latin (Pliny). From a Celtic or pre-Celtic substrate language, ultimately a derivation of Proto-Indo-European *néh₂us (“boat”), *(s)neh₂- (“to swim”), perhaps meaning "navigable" (cf. Proto-Indo-Iranian *naHwiyás).
Cognate, among others, with the rivers Nahe ( < Nava) in Germany and Noe ( < Navio) in England.
