From Central and Low German dialects, respectively from northern Middle High German *nippen and Middle Low German nippen, from a Proto-West Germanic *hnipp-Vn, expressive variant of *hnīpan (“to pinch”). Cognate with older Upper German nipfen, Dutch nippen, Old Norse hnippa.
