In summary

From Middle High German tāht, from Old High German tāht, from Proto-Germanic *þanhtu-/*þæhta- (“thread”), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *tek- (“to weave”). Cognate with Old Norse þáttr, for which reason the onset t- is an irregular hardening (compare tausend). The modern form is not inherited from literary Middle High German, but from the vernaculars. It has d- due to dialectal High German, and Low German influence (compare Middle Low German dacht); the vocalism is due to the common dialectal development -ā- → -ō- (compare Odem).
