Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ابدال (abdal, “a kind of heedless, disinterested, good-natured man, who takes no care for the morrow”), from Arabic أَبْدَال (ʔabdāl, “compensations, beggar, careless man”), from بَدَل (badal). Compare aptal (“dumb, stupid”), also from the same root.
