From Old Galician-Portuguese folla, from Late Latin folia, from the plural of Latin folium, probably from Proto-Indo-European *bʰolh₃yom (“leaf”), from *bʰleh₃- (“blossom, flower”). Doublet of folho and fólio. Compare Galician folla and Spanish hoja.
