From Middle Dutch git, get, from Latin gagātēs (likely by way of Old French get, jaiet), from Ancient Greek γαγᾱ́της (gagā́tēs), possibly from Γάγας (Gágas, “a town and river in Lycia”). Doublet of gagaat.
