Uncertain. De Vaan suggests from Proto-Italic *wagos, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *Hwogos, and compares this form to Old Norse vakka (“to totter”), Old High German wankon (“to totter”), winkan (“to waver, stagger”), Old English wincian (“to nod”).
