From Vulgar Latin, Late Latin cloppus, perhaps ultimately imitative of a limping person. The Italian was possibly altered by influence from zanca. Compare Romanian șchiop, cf. also Catalan and Occitan esclop, Old French clop and Sicilian zoppu.
