Coined by Italian scholar Francesco Moneti in 1677 as a superlative form of precipitevolmente (“hastily, precipitously”). By surface analysis, precipitevole (“hasty, precipitous”) + -issimo (“very”, superlative suffix) + -evole (“-able”) + -mente (“-ly”).
