Etimologia (Inglese)

For Vulgar Latin *scarafaius (cf. 10th c. glosses scarafagius), a local, perhaps Oscanized variant of Latin scarabaeus (“scarab, dung beetle”), of uncertain origin. This variant is also reflected by several Provencal forms. Compare Sicilian scravagghiu and Venetan scarafajo.
