From Middle High German vurt m or (northern) f, from Old High German furt m, from Proto-West Germanic *furdu, from Proto-Germanic *furduz, from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥téw-, oblique stem of *pértus. The feminine gender is of Central and Low German origin; compare Middle Low German vōrde m or f, whence also the doublet Förde f. Another doublet is Fjord, from Old Norse fjǫrðr. Further cognate with Dutch voord, English ford and firth.
