1. An unhealthy enlargement of a bird's gullet.
2. The head (capitulum) of certain plants, especially lettuce.
3. A tissue growth, a goitre, notably struma.
4. (obsolete) The throat or rather the whole neck of certain animals, especially birds, rarely of humans.
5. Any emotion felt as a lump in throat, e.g. caused by fear, anxiety or grief.
