From older escire, from Latin exīre, from ex + eō (“to go”). The word may have been phonetically influenced by the etymologically unrelated uscio (“door”). Compare Sicilian nèsciri, Catalan eixir, Romanian ieșire, Old Spanish exir and Old French issir.
