From the older form lecconerìa, either from leccare (“lick”, verb), or from Old High German lecchari or lecchōn, from Ancient Greek λιχνεία (likhneía, “gluttony; greed”), related to λείχω (leíkhō, “lick up”). Cognate with Latin lingō (“lick”, verb)and German lecker (“tasty”).
