Étymologie (Anglais)

From medieval Gallo-Italic chant "edge, corner" plus the -one augmentative suffix. The sense of "a portion of territory" alongside the literal meaning "corner" developed by the early 11th century. The root of chant is ultimately that of Latin cantus (“rim (of a wheel)”).
