Used as early as the 8th century in Gallic Late Latin calva sōrex (“bald mouse”); the first element ("bald") may originally be an alteration of Vulgar Latin *cawa (“crow, tawny owl”). Equivalent to chauve (“bald”) + souris (“mouse”).
