Étymologie (Anglais)

From a Germanic source, possibly Frankish *stap or Old High German stapf, staph (“step, stirrup”), both from Proto-Germanic *stapiz (“a step, rung (of a ladder)”). More at step. Alternatively: Late Latin; possibly from stō (“to stand”) + pēs (“foot”).
