Ătymologie
From earlier iland, from Middle English iland, yland, ylond, from Old English Ä«eÄĄland, from Proto-West Germanic *auwjuland, from Proto-Germanic *awjĆlandÄ (from Proto-Germanic *awjĆ (âisland, waterland, meadowâ), from Proto-Indo-European *hâekÊ·ehâ) + *landÄ (âlandâ), equivalent to ey + land. Doublet of Ăland. Cognate with Scots island, iland, yland (âislandâ), West Frisian eilĂąn (âislandâ), Saterland Frisian Ailound (âislandâ), Dutch eiland (âislandâ), Low German Eiland (âislandâ), German Eiland (âislandâ), Swedish ö (âislandâ), Ăland (âSweden's second largest islandâ), Danish Ăž (âislandâ), Norwegian Ăžy (âislandâ), Ăžyland (âlarge islandâ), Icelandic eyland (âislandâ). The insertion of âšsâ©âa 16th century spelling modificationâis due to a change in spelling to the unrelated term isle, which previously lacked s (cf. Middle English ile, yle). The re-addition was mistakenly carried over to include iland as well. Related also to German Aue (âwater-meadowâ), Latin aqua (âwaterâ). More at ea.
