From Old Galician-Portuguese oitavo, from Latin octāvus (“one-eighth”), q.v. As units of measure, named in reference to making up one-eighth of the alqueire (Portuguese bushel) or onça (Portuguese ounce). Cognate with Spanish ochava, Catalan octava, and Galician oitava.
