This term as well as its Germanic cognates: Old High German gasthūs whence Middle High German gasthūs, Modern German Gasthaus, and Old English gæsthūs are likely calqued from Medieval Latin hospitale (“hospice, shelter, guesthouse, jail”), Cf. hôpital, hôtel.
