Etimología (Inglés)

Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰrendʰ- (“to crush; gnash”), whence also perhaps Proto-Germanic *grindaną (“to grind”). However, Sihler argues that Proto-Indo-European labiovelars—when in preconsonantal position—were typically reduced to velar aspirates, which themselves often became voiceless stops in Latin (i.e. glaber). Though, concedes notes that Latin febris (from *dʰegʷʰ-) attests to the preservation of a labial element word-medially. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *grindaną (“to grind”), Lithuanian grę́sti (“to plane, scour”).
