Derived from the passive participle of the verb نَشَرَ (našara). In the meaning of prism compare Hebrew מִנְסָרָה (minsará, “prism”) and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܢܣܝܼܪܵܐ (nsīrā, “prism”). Possibly Calque of Ancient Greek πρίσμα (prísma, “something sawed”).
