Ετυμολογία (Αγγλικός)

From Latin viduus (“widowed”), probably modeled on the feminine form viuda, which predated it. It may have been altered from an Old Spanish form vidu (itself a learned borrowing from Latin) due to influence from the feminine; a naturally inherited form would be viso, which was attested once in isolation.
