Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اصلق (ıṣlıḳ, “a whistling noise”) (alternatively اصلیق or ایصلق), from Karakhanid سِقْرِقْ (sıḳrıḳ, “a whistle”), from سِقِرْماقْ (sıḳırmaḳ, “to whistle”), from Proto-Turkic *sïkïr- or *sïgïr- (“to whistle”). Compare Proto-Turkic *sïgïrčïk (“starling”). Cognates with Azerbaijani islıq, Kazakh ысқырық (ysqyryq), Kyrgyz ышкырык (ışkırık), Turkmen sykylyk.
