Etymologie (Englisch)

In summary

From Middle Dutch broosch. Cognate with Middle Low German brôsch, Old Norse breyskr, both “brittle”. Apparently from a Proto-Germanic *brauskiz (or *brauskaz). Perhaps related with Dutch verbrijzelen, German zerbröseln, English bruise. The Dutch inflected form should be *brose, but was voiced by analogy (cf. vlezig).
