First attested as ede around 1335. Etymology unknown. Not derived from Eden or the numeral een. One hypothetical reading of the oldest attestation is Middle Dutch *ede (“turf used as fuel”). Compare Ede, Eede and Oud-Ade. See also Dutch Low Saxon Ein.
