Etymologie (Englisch)

From cotogno (“quince tree”), or less likely a Vulgar Latin root cotōnea, taken as a feminine singular from the plural of Latin cotōneum, ultimately from Ancient Greek κυδώνιον (kudṓnion). Also possibly from mela cotogna, from Latin māla cotōnea, also a feminine singular from the plural of mālum cotōneum (“quince tree”).
