Inherited from Ottoman Turkish محكمه (maḥkeme, “a court of justice, tribunal, especially of the cannon law of Islam”), from Arabic مَحْكَمَة (maḥkama, “court”), verbal noun of حَكَمَ (ḥakama, “to exercise authority, to command, to bid, to rule”).
