In summary
From Middle Dutch *loef, from Old Dutch *luof, from Proto-Germanic *lōf-, from Proto-Indo-European *lāp-, *lēp-, *lep- (“flat”). Although attested only very late, its origin in Old Dutch is relatively certain as Old French borrowed lof from it. Cognate, with various inflectional variants, with Middle Low German lōf, Middle English lōf, Old Norse lófi, Gothic 𐌻𐍉𐍆𐌰 (lōfa). With a prefix also English glove, Old Norse glófi.
