From Proto-Italic *poomos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂po-h₁ém-os (“taken off”), from *h₂epo (“off”) (whence po-) + *h₁em- (“take”) (whence emō). Compare the same semantic development in Ancient Greek καρπός (karpós).
