From Proto-Indo-European *ḱred-dʰeh₁-ti (“to place one's heart, i.e. to trust, believe”), compound phrase of oblique case form of *ḱḗr (“heart”) (whence also Latin cor) and *dʰeh₁- (“to put, place, set”) (whence -dō (“put”)). Cognates include Sanskrit श्रद्-√धा (śrad-√dhā, “to trust, believe”) and Old Irish creitid (“believes”, verb).
