From Old High German Sion, from Ecclesiastical Latin Sīōn, from Koine Greek Σῑών (Sīṓn), from Biblical Hebrew צִיּוֹן (ṣiyyôn). Initial Z- was influenced by the Ashkenazi pronunciation /t͡s/.
