Formally, جِنّ (jinn, “jinns, demonkind, genies”) + ـِيّ (-iyy) though most likely borrowed from Classical Syriac ܓܢܝ (gnē, “spirit, genie”), or its emphatic form Aramaic גניא (ginnāyā) or Classical Syriac ܓܢܝܐ (genyā), also meaning "a tutelary deity" or "Astaroth idols". Compare Latin genius.
