Named after the town of Galați in the historic region of Moldavia for the timber imported from the region, from Ottoman Turkish قلاص (ḳalaṣ, “the town of Galați in Moldavia, name of many kinds of building timber imported”) or غلاص (ġalaṣ, “Galați on the lower Danube, pine or fir plank brought from the vicinity”).
