Etimologie (Engels)
In summary
Unknown. Compare Middle Dutch vliendermuis (“bat, flittermouse”) (first attested 1485) and vlinderen (“to flutter”) (first attested 1591); this noun is probably deverbal from the latter, which has a cognate in German flindern. De Vries however notes that Middle English flindre (“butterfly”) is attested as early as the 14th century, and thus views the verb as being secondary to the noun. Cognates include English flinder and West Frisian flinter; compare also Saterland Frisian Flitterke. This word appears to have largely displaced an older inherited term for butterfly, vijfwouter, which survived into modern Dutch as a dialectal term.
