Probably from *nank-i- + -isco, itself from Proto-Indo-European *h₂n-né-ḱ-ti, which derives from the root *h₂neḱ- (“to reach”). Cognate with Old Irish (do·)ánaic (“came, arrived”), Albanian kënaq (“to satisfy, be enough”), Old English ġenōg (“enough”), Sanskrit अश्नोति (aśnóti), see Sanskrit नश् (naś).
