From Latin carcerem, from Proto-Italic *karkros, from Proto-Indo-European *kr-kr- (“circular”), reduplication of *(s)ker- (“to turn, bend”), in the sense of “enclosure”. Cognate to Old Catalan càrcer/carçre, Spanish cárcel and Portuguese cárcere.
