From Old Galician-Portuguese mergullar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *merguliāre, from Latin mergulus, diminutive of mergus (“diver; loon”), from mergō (“I dive, I plunge”). Cognate with Portuguese mergulhar; compare also Spanish somorgujar.
