Via German Low German stūr from Middle Low German stūr, stūre, ultimately from the root of stehen (“to stand”). The word is first attested in standard German in the 19th century, but speedily became part of the core vocabulary. Cognate with Dutch stoer (itself a form of dialectal origin), Swedish stursk and with Old High German stūr, stūri, stiuri (“strong, big, stately, proud”).
