In summary

From Middle High German engerlinc, from Old High German engiring (10th c.), diminutive of angar ‘large larva’ (compare modern dialectal Anger, Inger), from Proto-Germanic *angaraz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂engʷʰ-ir- (compare Lithuanian ungurỹs ‘eel’, ánkštara, inksti̇̀ras ‘pimple; tapeworm’, Albanian thnegël ‘ant’). Compare also Unke, ultimately from a variant of the same Indo-European root.
